At Terra Nova's Healing Homes, the focus is on creating environments that not only cater to the physical needs of individuals but also nurture their emotional and mental states

The idea of therapeutic design is based on the belief that our environment can significantly affect our mental well-being. Have you ever entered someone's space and felt uneasy without knowing why? It's the lingering energy from stress and frustration that creates that sensation. If we don't declutter and refresh our surroundings, that negative energy remains in our homes. The question is, why was such intense emotion get left behind in the first place? There can be many reasons, but if your environment isn't designed to alleviate that frustration, then that's a clue to the answer. TNHH can help uplift the negative energy in your space, providing a more nurturing and comforting atmosphere that allows you to have a place to self-regulate. Self-regulation involves managing emotions (like frustration or excitement), controlling impulses, focusing attention, and adapting behavior to different situations. For my son with autism, it's an act he needs to engage in throughout the day, often by vocally acting out sports games, talking to himself in the bathroom, or swinging on his swing. He's processing his thoughts and managing his challenges, which is his way of self-regulating. As his mother, I'm proud of him for recognizing the value in this process, even if it's sometimes loud and distracting, lol. Having a designated space to work through our internal struggles is essential and can also serve as a place to decompress. It's vital to have a spot where you feel instantly at ease. While I often repeat this to friends and family, I'm now sharing it with all of you. There are options for those open to creating a personal area in their home—a place to meditate, focus, read, or use as a calm-down corner, or a spot for a swing or sensory play to help regulate the nervous system and reduce anxiety. Regardless of your physical or emotional condition, therapeutic design is beneficial for everyone, even if it's just a small nook in your space. It will greatly improve your overall mental health. In my daughter's room, I created a small area between her bunk bed and the wall. It's not much, but it works perfectly for her. These small spaces can have a significant mental impact.
